Applewood is an award winning estate of thirty four acres located adjacent to the Flint Cultural Center and Mott Community College. Applewood, the Charles Stewart and Ruth Rawlings Mott estate, which dates back to 1916, includes a formal perennial garden, a large rose/annual garden, a butterfly garden, extensive shrub borders, mature specimen trees, daylily and hosta collections, highly maintained turf, an antique apple orchard, a demonstration garden and production greenhouses. The estate has been described as one of the top five gardens in Michigan. A Calendar of Events provides several opportunities for the public to experience Applewood’s gardens. Be sure to visit our website to learn more.

Summer interns will work under the direct supervision of the professional horticulture staff with opportunities to experience various aspects of horticulture. The summer should bring significant professional growth in diverse areas of horticultural practice including: culture and maintenance of annuals and perennials, turf management, maintenance of woody plants, integrated pest management, landscape modification, hardscape installation, orchard management, plant propagation, greenhouse production and floral display and design. Individuals will be placed in areas that will enhance their professional goals. Interns will also assist with programs for the public. Every effort will be made to give interns a well-rounded experience. Field trips and workshops are included.

Applicants should currently be enrolled in a study program leading to a B.S. or Associates degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, Botany, Landscape Design or Environmental Science. Positions will be available Spring-Autumn 2011. The specific dates of employment will be finalized at the time of hiring. Summer interns will earn $8.00 to $10.50 per hour, forty hours per week, depending on each applicant’s qualifications and past experience. Limited housing is available for a modest fee.

Interested students are requested to submit a resume for review. Although prior horticultural experience is helpful, it is not required for employment. Please send resumes to:
